I would go with gears, then you can go up hills without dying.

No you can’t and the reason why is that even on level ground multiple gears give you more of an opportunity to get a serious workout in b/c you can vary how hard you want to work simply by shifting gears
If lowest gear on your rear wheel has 14 teeth on it and the biggest gear on the ring by your pedals has 52 teeth on it that means that every time that you go thru 1 complete revolution of those 52 teeth your rear tire will have gone thru 3 .7 revolutions and you will be working really hard
If the highest gear on your rear wheel has 32 teeth on w/ your pedal gear remaining the sameyour rear wheel will have moved thru 1.625 rev
The pedaling will be a lot easier and you will be able to go a lot faster
If the second largest gear ring by your pedals has 40 teeth on and the gears on your rear cassette remain the same then
1 complete turn of those 40 teeth will yield 2.85 turns of the rear wheel in the lowest gear and 1.25 turns in the highest
    Good luck
