Both are useful, but it depends what you are trying to achieve.

Rollers require your full concentration whilst riding, but are brilliant at improving your leg speed, balance and reflexes. They will also smooth out your riding style, and teach you to “spin” properly.

Resistance trainers don’t require as much concentration, and it is possible to say, watch TV, or even read whilst “riding”. Resistance trainers enable you to adjust the load on your legs, and this can help your legs learn to handle fatique better.

If you take your cycling seriously, and want to race, or develop skills specific to cycling, get the rollers, but if you simply want to maintain general fitness, and have no specific cycling ambitions, then get the resistance trainer.

Both devices can be used every day, and will have you sweating profusely, so you may want to tape over your stem & headset bolts to stop them rusting. In my opinion though, neither device is a substitute for putting on a jacket and going riding in the cold or rain. That’s what we serious cyclists do.

are good for if you want to watch tv

Yes you can ride indoors every day if you like. If it’s too much your body will tell you so.

Trainers are by far the most common of the two. 50 to 1 probably. Trainers all offer resistance to provide a good work out. Wind, mag and fluid resistance are offered; fluid is considered the best followed by mag then wind. Fluid is the quietest then mag, wind are very loud. They are all small and inexpensive. Rollers typically to not have any resistance, you just spin on the rollers. They also tend to cost a little more and are larger, but flat, so storage really isn’t a problem.

i use a regular trainer and have noticed my legs seem not to get as tired and recover quicker, ive never used rollers but i herd you have to have some skill to use them, as a novice rider i would suggest the trainer.

I use rollers and trainers and agree 100% with Chris. I get on the trainer when I just want some exercise while I watch a movie. I use the rollers when I want a real workout that improves my bike handling skills. Chris is right about concentration; if your mind wanders on a roller, you fall off!

Also, with trainer, you need to hook the bike up to it and it puts a lot of wear on the tire. With rollers, you just set the bike on them and you’re off.

Finally, if you get rollers, start by placing it in a doorway. It’s a big help in getting started.

Both are good. I use a resistamce trainer. Yes, you can use it everyday, but its good to take a break every once in a while.
