mmmmmmmmm, my favorite machine! I envy you have one at home. From a veteran who uses an eliptical anywhere from 4-6 days a week depending on whether I cycle or hit a gym class, I’d reccomend the following.

    - min 3 days a week, 5 is reccomended
    - start at 30 mins a day and slowly add on until you’ve reached 45 mins or an hour (depending on your time restraints).
    - start with whatever setting you are comfortable. However, the best for weight loss would be a setting that provides a high resistance for 1-4 mins and a low resistance for 1-4 mins. Once you build yourself up to healthy, try out other workouts such as hill climbs and randoms. The KEY is varying your excercise within the excersize. By staying on 1 level, you are not optimizing your workout time.
    - Stay at full pace, go as hard as you can for as long as you can. Ignore the “fat burning” and “carido” zone info. By staying at a high heart rate, for a longer period of time, ultimately you’ll burn more calories, burning more calories, means losing more FAT.
    - Do at least 1-2 days of weight training a week to tone and firm your body, especially after you’ve lost a few lbs.
    - combine with a healthy diet, or simply cut out refined flours, fast foods, food containing trans fat and hydrogenated corn suryup, and portion CONTROL
Final tip: I read when I do cardio, using a clip to tie down the book if necessary. Others listen to music, watch tv or even set up dvds to watch. Whatever passes the time best for you, I suggest it so you don’t get bored!
    good luck!
